Story Preview: Deb Kirkman
The following is part of a story written by Rose Skelly about Deb Kirkman.
The doctors and nurses were in my room, checking on me. I heard them say that my parents should start preparing for my funeral.
There I was, awake but not awake, but they didn’t think I could hear them. All I wanted to do was say, “I’m not dead! I can’t breathe on my own, but please, don’t unplug me!”
Thirty-five years later, I can still remember that fear, the fear that comes from a lack of control over your own life.
